Lavriv Basilian Monastery of St. Onuphriy was founded in the heyday of Galicia-Volyn principality (XIII-XIV centuries). Throughout history, the shrine has been an important center of religious and cultural life of the region. Like the most ancient Roman monasteries of Galicia, especially those in the Carpathians, in addition to the main purpose of the monastery, its structure also performed a defensive function, which is reflected in the architecture.

The most valuable local attraction is the Onuphriy Church - an ancient temple preserved in western Ukraine,with its XVI century frescoes. In the nineteenth century the Monastery had one of the largest libraries in Western Ukraine; in the twentieth century it housed a museum with a wonderful collection of icons. In the archives of the Lavriv Monastery the following items were stored: XII-XIII centuries parchment leaves, various Orders of Prince Lev, Polish Kings of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, luxurious manuscripts written in gold, old printed books, including rare editions, orders of Hetmans, Bishops and XVI century Moldavian masters, books by Petro Mohyla, Lazar Baranovich with their gift inscriptions to the Monastery.

In 1939, with the advent of soviet power the Monastery was closed. The library was seized and later burned, only valuable scriptures were selected and expropriated. Since then, the buildings of the monastery have beenused as an institution for children with developmental disabilities. The Monastery was restored to its full function in 1994.

Лаврівський Bасиліанський монастир св. Онуфрія заснований ще в часи розквіту Галицько-Волинського князівства (XII-XIV ст.). Впродовж усієї історії святиня була важливим осередком релігійного і культурного життя регіону. Як і більшість давньоруських монастирів Галичини, зокрема в Карпатах, окрім основного призначення, споруда виконувала також оборонну функцію, що зумовило особливості її архітектури.

Найціннішою місцевою пам'яткою є Онуфріївська церква — давній збережений на західноукраїнських землях  монастирський храм, де збереглися  фрески XVІ ст. У ХІХ ст. у монастирі була одна з найбільших бібліотек Західної України; у ХХ ст. тут розміщувався музей з чудесною колекцією ікон. В архіві Лаврівського монастиря зберігались пергаментні листки ХІІ-ХІІІ ст., грамоти князя Лева, польських королів ХV- ХVІ ст., розкішні рукописи, писані золотом; стародруки, рідкісні видання, грамоти гетьманів, владик та молдавських господарів (ХVІ ст.), книги Петра Могили, Лазаря Барановича з дарчим записом монастиреві.

В 1939 році з приходом радянської влади монастир закрили. Бібліотеку вивезли, відібравши цінні фоліанти, решту - спалили. З того часу монастирські приміщення використовувалися як заклад для дітей з відхиленням у розвитку. Повністю монастир відновив свої функції лише у 1994 р.
