Lviv. Dominikany and Porohova

The history of Pidvalna Street is quite short, as the first mention of it dates back to 1801. Earlier, this street could not have existed at all, as the defensive lines of ancient Lviv - walls, ramparts, and a moat - ran along this section.

Some of the buildings along the current street date back to ancient times. The oldest of them are two buildings erected almost simultaneously in the middle of the 16th century. The first arsenal here was built in 1430. But it was destroyed by the great Lviv fire of 1527. The burnt building was dismantled and a new building was erected in 1554-1556 as an arsenal. In the following years, the building was somewhat completed, and in 1704 it was destroyed again during the Swedish capture of Lviv. However, by 1706 the arsenal was rebuilt and still stands today.

Simultaneously with the construction of the City Arsenal in 1554-1556, the Powder Tower, the only tower of the ancient defensive fortifications that has survived to this day, was also being built. Unlike the City Arsenal, the Powder Tower did not suffer severe damage from fires and attacks. But this is not surprising, because its walls are 3 meters thick.

Історія вулиці Підвальної є доволі короткою, адже перша згадка про неї датована тільки 1801 роком. Раніше ця вулиця взагалі не могла існувати, оскільки на цьому відрізку проходили оборонні лінії давнього Львова – мури, вали та рів.  

Окремі  споруди, розташовані вздовж нинішньої вулиці, походять з давніх часів. Найстарішими з них є дві будівлі, що зведені практично одночасно в середині XVI ст. Одна з них – Міський арсенал. Перший арсенал тут було збудовано ще у 1430 році. Але його знищила велика львівська пожежа 1527 року. Спалену споруду розібрали і протягом 1554-1556 року звели новий будинок під арсенал. В наступні роки будівлю дещо добудовували, а у 1704 року вона знову була знищена під час захоплення Львова шведами. Однак, вже до 1706 року арсенал відбудували і він стоїть непорушно і до сьогодні.

Одночасно із побудовою Міського арсеналу у 1554-1556 роках, відбувалося й зведення Порохової вежі – єдиної башти давніх оборонних укріплень, що збереглася дотепер. .На відміну від Міського арсеналу Порохова вежа не зазнавала сильних руйнувань від пожеж і нападів. Але це не дивно, адже товщина її стін сягає 3 метрів.
