Lviv. The Complex of the Former Bernardine Monastery

The Bernardine Church and Monastery in Lviv is a sacred building complex formed in the first half of the XVII century. The dominant structure of the monastery is considered to be the church of St. Andrew (now the Church of the UGCC), erected in the first half of the XVII century. It incorporates elements of the Italian renaissance and the northern mannerism. 

The Bernardine Monastery has long been an external outpost of the Lviv fortification system. As a defense structure, the monastery was using its own systems of fortifications, and if necessary, defended the eastern borders of the city with flank fire. The monastery was located along the main line of the city defence. Eventually, the high fortress walls of the monastery complex became part of the urban fortifications. To date, only the eastern wall of fortifications remains preserved, as well as the Glynia tower that was later recreated by the Lviv restorers.

Костел і монастир бернарди́нів у Львові — ансамбль сакральних споруд, сформований у першій половині XVII ст.  Домінантою монастирського ансамблю виступає  храм св. Андрія (тепер – церква УГКЦ), зведений у першій половині XVII ст., в архітектурі якого переплелися риси італійського ренесансу та  північного маньєризму.

Монастир бернардинів довгий час був зовнішнім форпостом системи укріплень Львова. Виконувати цю оборонну функцію йому дозволяли власні системи укріплень і, в разі потреби, він захищав фланговим вогнем східні кордони міста. Монастир був розташований за основною лінією оборони міста. Однак, згодом високі фортечні мури комплексу монастиря стали інтегральною частиною системи міських фортифікацій. На сьогоднішній час зберіглася тільки східна стіна укріплень та відтворена львівськими реставраторами Глинянська вежа.
