Lviv. Transfiguration Church

This church is in the central part of the city. It was built on the foundations of the XVIII century temple – the former Trinitarium Church, using the walls and structures preserved after the fire of 1848.  Main building periods: 1703-1731 (construction of the Trinitarium Church); 1783 (reconstruction for the University library); 1875-1898 (modern temple), architect Sylvester Gavrishkevich. 

In its current state, the architecture of the church combines forms of historicism with the remnants of baroque forms and early classicism. The author of the plastic interior design and the figure of the apostles in the drum was Leonard Marconi. The iconostasis is made by T. Popel. Painting compositions - by T. Kopystynsky and K. Ustyianovych.

In 1948, on Krakivska Street, in front of the Transfiguration Church, the head of the initiative group for the transition of Greek Catholics to the subordination of the Orthodox Moscow Patriarchate Gabriel Kostelnik was shot dead.  Soviet propaganda blamed the OUN (Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists) underground for his murder, although it is possible that Stalin's special services removed an undesirable witness to the liquidation of the UGCC (Ukrainian Greek Catholics Church). The Transfiguration Church was the first in Ukraine to return to the UGCC, on October 29, 1989.

Окремо розташована церква на ділянці в центральній частині міста. Зведена на фундаментах храму XVIII ст. – колишнього костелу тринітаріїв – з використанням його стін та конструкцій, збережених після пожежі 1848 р. Основні будівельні періоди: 1703-1731 (спорудження костелу тринітаріїв); 1783 (перебудова під бібліотеку університету); 1875-1898 (сучасний храм), арх. Сильвестр Гавришкевич. В сучасному стані, архітектура церкви поєднує форми історизму з залишками форм бароко і раннього класицизму. Пластичне оформлення інтер’єру та фігури апостолів у барабані – авторства Леонарда Марконі. Іконостас виконаний Т. Попелем. Малярські композиції – Т. Копистинського і К. Устияновича.

У 1948 році на вулиці Краківській, перед Преображенською церквою був застрелений керівник ініціативної групи з переходу греко-католиків у підпорядкування православного Московського патріархату о. Гавриїл Костельник. Радянська пропаганда звинуватила в його вбивстві підпілля ОУН, Хоч і не виключено, що сталінські спецслужби прибрали небажаного свідка ліквідації УГКЦ.

29 жовтня 1989 року Преображенська церква першою в Україні повернулася до УГКЦ.
