Lviv. Church of the Archangel Michael - the Former Complex of the Carmelite Monastery

The Church of Archangel Michael (former church of the Barefoot Carmelite Monastery) is a part of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) in Lviv, standing on one of the picturesque hills of Lviv near the Gunpowder Tower. It was built in the first half of the XVII century for the monastic Order of Barefoot Carmelites with the assistance of the foundation of Prince O. Zaslavsky-Ostrohsky of Bratslav. The church and monastery, at that time, formed a separate fortress in Lviv, similar to the Bernardine church in the Galician suburbs.

It should be noted that the temple and monastery were able to withstand the Turkish siege of 1672, the invasion of the Tatars in 1695. One of the tragic pages in the life of both Lviv and the monastery was in 1704, when the building was captured by Swedish troops of Charles XII. First, the Swedes captured the monastery, and then Lviv through the Bosyatska Gate. As a result, the city was looted, and then a toll was imposed on the city. 

But there was an even more tragic time for the church after about half a century of communist persecution, and the banning of religion after World War II. In 1945 the authorities closed the monastery, and the monks were forced to move to Krakow. During the soviet period, the monastery was used as a homeless shelter, and later housed a warehouse. During the 1960s and 1980s, the garden of the former monastery was a meeting place for Lviv hippies and other informal groups.

On March 25, 1991, the monastery complex and church were handed over to the monks of the Studio Charter in Lviv, who began active pastoral care, involving a wide range of lay people. The Study group (“studyty”) is a community that seeks to achieve the salvation of their own and human souls through prayer, gospel instruction, and righteous living. It was founded in Ukraine by Metropolitan Andrei Sheptytsky after the First World War. An important part in the life of the monastery is nurturing of the Eastern tradition of the Byzantine-Slavic rite. In addition, students are engaged in missionary work, icon painting, catechetical activities, spiritual care for youth, publishing, handicrafts, and work in various workshops. Children's catechetical groups and youth Christian organizations have been established there. Books of religious content are published by Svichado, the Lviv publishing house.

Львів. Церква Архистратига Михаïла – колишній Комплекс монастиря Кармелітів 

Храм Святого Архистратига Михаїла (колишній костел монастиря кармелітів босих) — храм УГКЦ у Львові, височить на одному з мальовничих пагорбів Львова біля Порохової вежі. Він був побудований у першій половині XVII століття для чернечого Ордену кармелітів босих при сприянні фундації брацлавського князя О. Заславського-Острозького. Храм і монастир на той час творили окрему фортецю у Львові, подібну до храму бернардинів на Галицькому передмісті. 

Слід зауважити, що храм і монастир змогли витримати турецьку облогу 1672 року, нашестя татар 1695 року. Однією з трагічних сторінок як в житті Львова, так і монастиря є 1704 р., коли будівлю захопили шведські війська Карла XII.  Спочатку шведи захопили монастир, а потім через Босяцьку хвіртку – Львів. Як наслідок – місто було пограбовано, а після цього на нього накладено контрибуцію.

Але ще трагічніші часи  для храму - майже півстолітнє комуністичне переслідування і заборона релігії після ІІ світової війни, коли у 1945 р. влада закрила монастир, а ченці переїхали до Кракова. У радянський період в монастирі спочатку проживали безпритульні, а згодом тут розмістили склад. Протягом 1960-1980 рр. сад колишнього монастиря був місцем зустрічі та спілкування львівських хіпі, а також інших неформальних груп.

Монастирський комплекс і храм 25 березня 1991 року переданий ченцям Студійського уставу у Львові, які почали активне душпасторство, залучаючи до участі широкі кола мирян. Студити – це спільнота, яка молитвами, додержанням євангельських настанов і праведного життя має на меті осягнути спасіння своїх і людських душ. Заснована в Україні митрополитом Андреєм Шептицьким після Першої світової війни. Чільне місце в житті чернецтва належить плеканню східної традиції візантійсько-слов’янського обряду. Крім того, студити займаються місійною працею, іконописом, катехитичною діяльністю, духовною опікою над молоддю, видавничою діяльністю, ремісництвом, працею у різного роду майстернях. Створені дитячі катехитичні групи, молодіжні християнські організації. Книжки релігійного змісту випускає львівське видавництво “Свічадо”.
